Team Waco Smothers Temple VA Chess Team!

L-R: Mario Leal(alternate), Jim Bradfield, Larry Kocian, Ted Penner, Glenn Gilbert

For the third match in four months, Waco has fielded a team to give the Temple VA Chess Club a battle.  Team Waco provided just that as they won their third match with a score of 9.5 - 6.5.  The month's team included: Jim Bradfield, Glenn Gilbert, Larry Kocian, and Ted Penner.  This match was held in Temple on Saturday, July 14th.

This month was filled with some drama as the VA team came up short some team members.  Team Waco agreed to allow them to have a ringer as Freddy Lim, a local Temple player, was available to play.  Lim's 1639 rating puts him well over the 1400 rating ceiling that the Waco Chess Club adheres to.  We came to play chess and nothing was going to stop that!!

L-R: Freddy Lim and Glenn Gilbert

Now for the drama.  The first round saw the Temple Team grab a one point lead at 2.5-1.5.  In the second round, the Temple Team held on and drew the round 2-2.  Then the Waco magic woke up from hibernation as Team Waco blasted the VA team 4-0.  This 3rd round fireworks were lead off by Larry Kocian's win against Freddy Lim.  You can see this game on the analysis page.  Team Waco finished the victory by drawing the final round 2-2.

This match is great fun.  If you are interested in participating in the next match, Let us know.  You have to be a Waco Chess Club member and be rated under 1400.

Team Waco Defeats Temple VA Chess Club !

A four person chess team comprised of Jim Bradfield, Joe Helton, John DeVries, and Lisa DeVries traveled to Temple on April 7th for a match with the "Temple VA Chess Club". Team Waco won 11-5. Jim Bradfield and Joe Helton played quality chess..each won all four games. Lisa DeVries was a last minute substitute..she regularly attended Waco Chess Club meetings from 1993-1996 & now lives in Fort Worth. Mario Leal withdrew from competition because of a medical emergency in his family. Lisa won two of four games. John DeVries' record was 1-3. The Temple VA Chess Club specifically requested that no Team Waco member have a USCF rating >1400. This removed Ken Henkelman and Gary Lee Webb from the roster. The Temple VA Chess Club and Team Waco intend to have monthly matches. The winner will keep a handsome plaque. The Temple VA team was comprised of Eddy Sammons (a regular at Waco Chess Club meetings), Jerry Andrews (a friend of the Waco Chess Club), Steve Smith (a 1320 USCF player), and Fred Black. Jerry Andrews departed after Round 2 and gave his spot to Bob Sloan. Eddy Sammons' record was 2-2. Steve Smith's record was 2-2. Jerry Andrews' record was 1-1. Fred Black lost all four games, and Bob Sloan lost both of his games. The Waco Chess Club deeply appreciates the wonderful hospitality displayed by Henry Mosley and the Temple VA Chess Team! Team Waco is looking forward to a return match in Waco with the Temple VA Chess Club!

Waco Chess Team Wins at State Championship!

teampic.jpg (27107 bytes)

Team Waco tied for first in the Under 1900 section and 3rd overall at the Texas Team Championship held Feb.3 & 4 in San Antonio.  The team consisted of: Gary Webb (1751), Ken Henkelman (1751), John DeVries (1271), and Mario Leal (1259).  Team Waco suffered a hard loss in round 1, and it wasn't until Round 3 that we came on strong.  Webb was paired against expert, Jesse Buentello (2022). Henkelman against Robert Barber(1882). DeVries against Gary Zintgraff (1774).  Leal against Stephen Guerra (1693).  Henkelman and DeVries had spirited games but lost putting pressure on Webb and Leal to save the match.  Webb stayed focused and forced the expert into a losing endgame.  Easily winning, Webb just smiled.  Leal's game looked bleak as Guerra had deadly passed pawns in the center.  With 1 minute left in the first time control, Leal found a combination to open things up and scare up chances.  Those chances prevailed as Guerra took one too many pawns finding himself with no feasible moves and no time.  Round four saw Webb lose to San Antonio master, John Patty while boards 2, 3 and 4 won their games.

Player stats (individual points)
