08/29/2002-Ken Henkelman wins his second city championship!  Henkelman faced the only other person to have his name on the Janes Cup-Jason Howell- in the last round.  Howell was a half point ahead and only need a draw to win.  Henkelman buckled down and won two pawns out of the open.  Things got exciting as the 3 time city champion won back his two pawns and looked as though he was going to hold the draw.  Henkelman's knight found squares and was able to eat pawns leading Henkelman to his second city championship.

06/29/2002-Keving Fleming and Jason Howell take top honors at the 4th Annual Waco Open.  Mike Simpson wins the Reserve Section.  Waco is still breaking records as this tournament is still growing.  This installment boasted 60 players and a prize fund over $600.  Other winners include: Top A-Aurelio Gonzales, Top B-Robert McGregor, Larry Kocian, Top C-Bryan Smith, 2nd Reserve + Top E- Dan Rath and Marvin Wells.  Another great tournament!  Special Thanks to John DeVries, Glenn Gilbert, Ken Henkelman, and Windy Leal.

02/23 - 02/24/2002- Team Waco placed 6th out of 11 at the Texas Team Championship.  This year's team was comprised of: Gary Webb, Ken Henkelman, Larry Kocian, and John DeVries.  View the full report HERE.

02/16/2002-Henkelman, and Miller take home top honors in the Waco February Swiss.  Kocian took home the top <1400 prize.  See the full results HERE.

01/19/2002-Rohrbaugh, Tia, and Howell tie for 1st in Waco January Swiss.  Darieck Foster wins the Reserve.  Go to Past Tournaments for the full results.

12/01/2001-Team Waco suffered its first defeat as the Temple VA Chess Club brought a wonderful team and broke their 4 match losing streak.  We will get them next time!!

11/10/2001-4 tie at Waco Thanksgiving Open.  Larry Young, Gary Webb, Govind Persad, and Ricky Pierce win the Open section.  Stuart Madsen wins the Reserve with Calvin Furlong taking clear second.  Final results HERE.

10/6/2001-Ken Henkelman wins the Waco Quick Championship!!  Details to come.  I promise a long story of both Jason and Ken's victory!!

10/5/2001-The Waco Scholastic Chess Club held a simul today with Mario.  With just 10 minutes left until time to leave, John Warren stepped in and finished 4 of the games  left while Mario handled the other 7.  The outcome was 18-0-0. Replaced Flag with a ribbon in honor of the victims of September 11th.

10/1/2001-The Waco Chess Club is proud to announce that US Chess Live is now our Official Chess server.  We are compiling a list of Waco Chess Players and their handles who play on this server.  If you would like to be added, please email me.  If you would like that list, please email me.  Only Waco Chess Club members will be given this list.  Also, I added some more associations the "Neighboring Associations" part of our links page.

09/25/2001-I added a flag to our website in honor of the victims of the September 11th tragedy.  If you would like to donate money or see how you can help, there are several charities that are doing great work.  Try these: The Salvation ArmyThe American Red Cross, or The United Way of New York.

09/22/2001-Tim Pernes of Ft.Worth takes lone first at the September Swiss.  Gary Webb and Carmen Chairez finish tied for second.  The Reserve Section saw Nolan Slesnick and Calvin Furlong finish 1st and second respectfully.  Click HERE to see the final standings.

bullet06/25/2001-We can now accept Credit Cards online for entry fees!!  Thanks to the secure and fast service that Paypal provides, we can finish the entire entry process on the web.  Other items are in the works like: USCF memberships and TCA memberships.  Go to the Tournaments page to get registered for the Waco Open!

bullet06/17/2001-Added more databases to the Analysis Board.  Special for our Blackmar-Diemar and King's Gambit players, You know who you are, are some extensive databases that can be used to help learn these exciting openings.  Both files are large so they take some time to process.  Please be patient.  Also, I added a tournament and match: 2001 Wijk aan Zee and Kasparov's historic match with Deep Blue.  Click HERE to go there now.
bullet06/2/2001-Team Waco Took the win home against the Temple VA Chess Club.  This match consisted of three players from each club.  Waco's team boasted John DeVries, John Warren, and Larry Kocian.  Temple VA brought strong players in Eddy Sammons, Jerry Andrews, and B.C. Black.  Waco came out winning the match at 5.5 to 3.5.  
bullet05/28/2001-Waco is home to a 3 time State Champion.  Jason Howell won the Texas State Amateur Championship for the 3rd time.  He went undefeated with 5 wins and 2 draws.  Jason, YOU ARE THE MAN!!!! View the final results HERE.

bullet05/12/2001-AJ Moore Wins Scholastic Team Chess Championship of Waco.  Led by 2000 Waco Scholastic Champion, Eric Washington, the "Dawgs" went undefeated.  Click HERE for more information.

bullet04/07/2001-TEAM WACO DEFEATS TEMPLE VA CHESS CLUB - A four person chess team comprised of Jim Bradfield, Joe Helton, John DeVries, and Lisa DeVries traveled to Temple on April 7th for a match with the "Temple VA Chess Club". Click HERE for the TEAM WACO news page.
bullet04/05/2001-Jason Howell held a simul at Whitney ISD.  After playing around 60 games, Jason was unbeaten.  Way to go Jason!!

bullet03/25/2001-I added a cool Java applet for the Analysis Board.  You can view games from the 2000 Waco Open.  Also, I put in an openings database, endings database and a selection of puzzles from Reinfeld's "1001 Brilliant Ways to Checkmate."  Check it out!!!

bullet02/14/2001-Four Waco Players competed at the Region II Scholastic Middle and High School Championships held Feb.10 in Mansfield. 62 players competed in the High School section. Waco Scholastic Champion, Eric Washington placed 17th. Joel Baker placed 32nd. Robert Casiano placed 36th. Eric and Robert made up the AJ Moore Academy team. They placed 10th out of 15 teams. A nice feat by a team with just 2 members. In the Middle School section, Matt Keil brought home a ribbon as he placed 15th out of 55 players. Waco was well represented as all the players fought hard. bullet02/04/2001-Waco's very own Gary Webb (1751)Ken Henkelman (1751), John DeVries (1271), and Mario Leal (1259) put it to 'em at the State Championship held in San Antonio, Feb.3rd and 4th. Hats off to the team! Read Mario's post for some first hand details.
