The Dawgs of AJ Moore Win Team Championship!

BK Row: Heber Lopez, Eric Washington, Mr. Pfleging (Asst. Coach), Chris Clater. FR Row: Charles Lee, Robert Casiano.

The Waco Chess Club played host to the first ever Waco Scholastic Team Championship on May 12 at the Salvation Army Community Center.  Five teams attended the tournament: AJ Moore, HP Miles Middle, University Middle(2 teams), and the Waco Scholastic Chess Club.  At the end of the day, it was AJ Moore's team, "Dawgs," that came out victorious.

Eric Washington

Led by 2000 Waco Scholastic Champ, Eric Washington, the Dawgs came into the tournament on a mission:  To bring the title home to AJ Moore.  That they did in fine fashion as they came away undefeated at 12-0.

The team was all smiles as they received the Championship trophy.  Some even pulled the old Stanley Cup ritual and gave the trophy some sugars.  AJ Moore's line up was: Eric Washington, Charles Lee, Heber Lopez, Robert Casiano and Chris Clater.  The Dawgs were coached by Craig Thornton.

The Waco Chess Club will be holding this tournament on a regular basis hoping to promote interaction between local scholastic clubs.  It worked well as some coaches were already talking about next year.

Special Thanks goes to Scott at The China Grill Buffet who bought the trophy.  Thanks also to: Glenn Gilbert, Ken Henkelman, and Bill Matney for helping with the direction of the tournament.  Thanks to Velma Kocian, Windy Leal, Craig Thornton, John Warren, and Bob Wehrer for helping to make this championship one to remember.

See the Final Standings!
